In one of the most anticipated star turns of the spring season, Tony Award winner Mark Rylance is headed to Broadway in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem. Tickets are now on sale for this universally acclaimed dark comedy, which is set to begin previews at the Music Box Theatre on April 2 and open on April 21, directed by Ian Rickson.
Rylance plays Johnny ‘Rooster’ Bryan, a local waster and modern-day Pied Piper living in a ramshackle trailer in rural England. On the day of the local fair, the council officials want to serve Rooster with an eviction notice, his son wants to be taken to the fair, his father wants to give him a serious kicking and a motley crew of mates wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol. Critics describe Jerusalem as "rollicking," "bold" and "gorgeous," a play that "keeps coming at its audience in unpredictable gusts, rolling from comic to furious."
Amazingly, Jerusalem represents the second Broadway opening for Rylance in six months at the same Broadway theater: He received rave reviews at the Music Box in October 2010 for his star turn in La Bete. The star's performance as Rooster in Jerusalem has already earned him an Olivier Award, so Broadway theatergoers should get tickets now for one of the can’t-miss performances of the year.
